Middle Fork Stanislaus River Fishing Report - October 13th, 2025

The Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River is currently running at 39cfs, though with the incoming storm system expected to bring precipitation over the next few days, flows may rise slightly. These late-season levels are typical for this time of year and still provide excellent fishing opportunities.

Weather Outlook

The weather this week will be much cooler, with highs in the mid to upper 30s during the first half of the week and climbing into the mid-50s by the weekend. This low-pressure system is also expected to bring snow around Kennedy Meadows, and Sonora Pass will remain closed until at least Thursday.

Tactics & Fly Recommendations

With the drop in air temperatures and incoming precipitation, anglers should focus on euro nymphing or indicator nymphing setups. Fish will tend to hold deeper in the water column during these cold, unsettled conditions, so prioritize slow, deep runs where fish often group together. Once the system clears, expect activity to pick up again near the surface.

Recommended flies:

  • Pheasant Tail Nymphs
  • Jig Hare’s Ear Nymphs
  • Fire Orange Perdigons
  • San Juan Worms (especially effective during precipitation)

Season Outlook

While this marks the start of colder weather and the close of the summer season, don’t overlook this period. The crowds have thinned out, water temperatures remain cold, and fish are beginning to congregate in prime holding water. Be sure to bring plenty of layers and rain gear, and enjoy some quiet time on the river before winter fully sets in.
