The Middle Fork of the Stanislaus is currently running at 33 CFS, which is low but typical for this time of year. Flows have been steadily trending downward and will likely remain at this level unless another storm system brings measurable precipitation. Recent weather has been on the cooler side, with daytime highs in the upper 40s and overnight lows in the low to mid 30s. The section remains accessible for now, but we anticipate that one more storm may close access until spring.
With winter conditions now fully setting in, dry fly fishing has slowed considerably in this area. Nymphing will be the most productive method moving forward. The combination of low flows, cool water temperatures, and a lack of consistent dry fly activity pushes fish into their winter pattern—seeking out the deepest, slowest-moving holding water available.
An indicator nymphing setup will be your best tool in these conditions, allowing you to get your flies down quickly and maintain a natural drift in deeper runs.

Fishing naturally slows this time of year, but there are still plenty of fish to be found and very little angling pressure. When targeting this or any higher-elevation water, focus exclusively on the deep, slow moving zones. Expect to cover more ground and fish fewer individual pockets—that’s normal and the most productive approach right now.
Don’t forget to pinch your barbs, as winter regulations are now in effect. If you’re not able to get on the water, this is a perfect window to restock your fly boxes, tie up new patterns, or prep for the opener on the lower rivers.
