Middle Fork Stanislaus River Fishing Report - September 8th, 2025

The Middle Fork of the Stanislaus is currently flowing at 33cfs, marking a notable drop from the past two weeks. A brief spike in flows last week was tied to recent precipitation, but levels have since settled. Flows will likely remain near this range through the rest of summer and into early fall, as the minimum required release is 25cfs. That said, occasional short-lived bumps may occur with passing storms.

Weather Outlook

Expect cool and moderate conditions this week, with daytime highs in the low 60s (dipping into the mid-50s at times) and overnight lows in the low 40s. These cooler temps will help keep water temperatures stable and fish-friendly despite the lower flows.

Tactics & Fly Recommendations

With flows nearing their seasonal low, dry fly fishing is the top tactic. Much of the river is too shallow for effective nymphing, but the surface bite has been strong and allows anglers to cover a lot of water.

  • Dry Fly Fishing – Best overall approach.
  • Dry-Dropper Rigs – Effective in wide sweeping turns or slightly deeper pockets.
  • Small Indicator Nymphing – Limited, but worth trying in deeper runs.

Recommended Fly Patterns:

  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Parachute Adams
  • Stimulators
  • Hi-Vis Caddis

Season Outlook

Fishing remains strong and consistent, and the scenery is exceptional this time of year. With lighter crowds now that school is back in session and Labor Day has passed, this stretch offers a quieter experience. The only watch-out is air quality, as wildfire smoke has occasionally drifted into the region.
