The Middle Fork Stanislaus River is currently flowing at 170cfs, a significant decrease from last week and a substantial drop from what we have seen over the past 24 hours. The forecast calls for slightly cooler weather this week, with daytime highs in the mid-70s and a chance of thunderstorms heading into the weekend.
These are some of the best conditions we have seen on the Middle Fork so far this season. Flows are dropping daily, water temperatures are steadily increasing, and the river is becoming more angler-friendly with each passing day.
While water temperatures remain on the cooler side, currently hovering in the low 50s, trout are actively feeding and becoming increasingly aggressive as the water warms throughout the day. Morning hours have continued to favor nymphing techniques, with both euro nymphing and indicator nymphing producing consistent results. The Middle Fork offers a variety of water types that are ideally suited to both approaches, allowing anglers to effectively target everything from deep runs to pocket water.
As afternoon water temperatures rise, the dry fly bite has begun to improve significantly. Anglers should expect the best surface activity from mid-afternoon into the evening hours, with increasing opportunities to target fish looking up.
It's hard to believe that summer has only just begun, yet we are already seeing some of the best fishing conditions of the year on the Middle Fork. With flows continuing to drop and water temperatures gradually climbing, the fishing should only continue to improve throughout the remainder of the summer.
If you've been waiting for prime conditions, this is the week to get on the water. Be sure to pack layers for the cooler mornings and keep an eye on the forecast as thunderstorms are possible later in the week. If you're planning a trip, stop by the shop and we'd be happy to help you select productive fly patterns, dial in your gear, and point you toward some great water.
