The North Fork of the Stanislaus is currently running at 187cfs, which is down slightly from last week. Flows continue to trend in the right direction, and we are steadily approaching the prime range for this stretch of water. The weather this week is expected to be much warmer, with highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s throughout the week.
With an extended period of warm weather in the forecast, water temperatures should begin to rise noticeably. As water temperatures increase, bug activity will also ramp up, bringing more opportunities to fish dry flies throughout the day. While dry fly fishing should continue to improve over the coming weeks, current conditions still favor nymphing as the most productive tactic.
Both euro nymphing and indicator nymphing will continue to be highly effective, especially in the deeper runs and pocket water. However, anglers looking for a more versatile and enjoyable approach should consider fishing a dry-dropper rig. While a dry-dropper setup won't provide the same precise nymph presentation as a euro or indicator rig, it allows anglers to effectively target fish feeding both below and on the surface.
As flows continue to decrease and water temperatures climb, expect dry fly opportunities to become increasingly consistent.
All signs are pointing toward prime summer fishing conditions on the North Fork. Flows continue to improve, water temperatures are rising, and insect activity should increase significantly throughout the week. If you've been waiting for conditions to line up, now is a great time to get on the water.
With the warmer weather, be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sun-protective clothing. If you're looking for current conditions, fly recommendations, or access information, stop by the shop and we'd be happy to help get you pointed in the right direction.
