The North Fork of the Stanislaus is currently running at 275cfs, which is a decent flow for anglers looking to target this stretch of water. However, with an extended stretch of warmer weather expected throughout the week, there is a strong possibility flows will increase as runoff ramps up. The weather this week is expected to be warm, with highs reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s all week long.
Flows are still slightly above what we would consider ideal, and with warming temperatures expected to accelerate snowmelt, anglers should anticipate changing conditions throughout the week. At the current flows, nymphing will continue to be the most productive tactic. Both euro nymphing and indicator nymphing will have their place on this river, although there are currently a few more runs that favor an indicator setup due to the increased flows and depth. Focus on softer seams, deeper runs, and slower edges where fish can escape the heavier current.
While conditions are continuing to improve, runoff is expected to be in full swing this week with the prolonged warm weather. The river is still cold, moving swiftly, and can change quickly depending on temperatures throughout the day. Anglers should use extreme caution when wading and keep an eye on rising flows. If you plan to fish this area, don’t forget sunscreen, sun protection, and plenty of extra water for the warmer temperatures ahead.
