The West Walker River is currently running at 1,150 CFS, which is a high flow but still fishable. While smaller flows make access easier and provide more water to work with, there are still fish to be caught in this stretch. The weather this week is expected to be partly cloudy with highs in the lower 70s and lows in the mid-40s.
Weather & River ConditionsAs a freestone river, the West Walker experiences daily fluctuations in flow tied directly to snowmelt in the high country. We’ve begun to see a downward trend in flows over the last few days. With the river running high, the water remains extremely cold, resulting in minimal hatches and fish seeking cover from the fast current.
Fishing TechniquesThe best approach during these conditions is indicator nymphing or euro nymphing. Focus on slower, deeper sections of the river, typically found on larger bends and curves. Target water just a few feet off the bank, where fish move closer to avoid being swept away by the swift mid-channel current.
Recommended Flies
These flies offer the visibility and movement needed to entice fish in fast, cold water.
OutlookAlthough the water is high and moving fast, plenty of fish are still active in this stretch. The scenery is fantastic right now, making for a rewarding day on the river.
Safety Reminder: Exercise caution along the river’s edge due to swift currents.
